My Sister Remembers Her Past Life. Somehow, I Believe Her. - The New York Times

Living with my sister during the pandemic taught me to suppress my cynicism and embrace her belief in reincarnation.

When we were younger, my older sister Heba kept a photo on her dresser in our bedroom that always caught my eye. She said I was the young red-haired girl in the picture, but I was born with blonde curls and had light brown hair at the time. The girl in the picture was named Sara, like me, and I would later learn that the full story of the photo was too baffling for me to understand at the time.

My family is Druze, a thousand-year-old religion whose adherents mostly live in Lebanon, Syria, Israel and Jordan. Among the faith’s beliefs is that every human being is reincarnated. Your body is a shell, and your spirit can claim another life form to live on indefinitely. Many Druze say that certain people can remember details about their past lives. My sister is one of them.

I am more skeptical than Heba when it comes to spirituality, but I have never denied her experience. Because I had heard other stories about people from our hometown in Lebanon who died but “came back to life” in new bodies, it didn’t seem far-fetched that she had, too. Still, I wouldn’t discuss her past life openly — I imagined talking about it at dinner parties, only to be met with eye rolls, the same way I dismiss the conversation whenever my friends go on about their astrological signs. It wasn’t until I started living with my sister in New Jersey during the pandemic that I learned to suppress my cynicism — and embrace her beliefs.

I started questioning religion when I was 12. My family had just moved from New Jersey back to Lebanon, and I was shocked by the rampant sectarianism. Then, when I was 16, my father died of cancer, and I kept hearing the Arabic phrase “maktub” — “it is written.” While I understood the point of this tenet (to accept one’s fate), I thought it made all our human efforts seem futile. Similarly, my parents had taught us that our souls live on after death, but this belief made it hard for me to see life as precious. Since I couldn’t find comfort in faith-based acceptance, I searched for guidance in books about atheism, philosophy and science instead. Believing that our time on Earth is limited helped me to live life to its fullest.

Heba, who is eight years older than me, always leaned more spiritual. Unlike me, the way she made sense of her struggles was through faith, not necessarily in God, but in something greater, which included her belief in past lives. She was just 3 years old when she first declared that her name was Nada, and pretended to prepare sandwiches for her “husband,” Amin, to enjoy when he came home from work.

When my mother mentioned this, a friend said she knew of a woman named Nada who used to live a half-hour drive from our town. Nada had died, but had been married to a man named Amin. A few days later, Nada’s mother and sister knocked on our door and said they had heard about Heba. (Word gets around in small villages.) They asked if Heba would visit their home to see if she could recognize anything, maybe Nada’s room or her favorite nook. Out of politeness, my mother warily agreed.

At the house, Heba asked about an older woman who used to sit in a corner in one of the bedrooms. She must have been referring to Nada’s grandmother, who had since died, the family said. Heba also recognized Nada’s bedroom and remembered how she loved spending time in the family’s garden. They took those clues as confirmation that my sister had memories from Nada’s life.

My parents emigrated to the United States soon after, but Nada’s memories stayed with Heba. Years later, while vacationing in Lebanon with my father in 2000, she asked if she could see Nada’s family again. During their second meeting she found out that at the time of her death, Nada had an infant daughter named Sara — the redhead in the photo — and she was 16, nearly the same age as Heba was. Sara’s family had told her about my sister, and they agreed to meet.

Both girls, Heba said, felt awkward.

“So you’re my mom?” Sara asked sarcastically. She complained about her stepmother, who Sara said had tried to get rid of any traces of Nada. At times, Sara addressed Heba as if she were Nada: “They burned your sweater, and that was all that I had left of you,” Sara said. In reality, my sister was a sophomore in high school, living in New Jersey, with Mariah Carey posters on her wall.

My sister said she felt as though she had forced Nada’s family to revisit an unresolved trauma, and it weighed on her. Over the next several years, she tried to put the whole experience behind her. The family had given her a few keepsakes: a bracelet, a gold necklace and the picture of Sara. Eventually, Heba put them away. She went to college in Lebanon a few years later, and Sara showed up at her door unannounced to invite Heba to her wedding. My sister didn’t go. For nearly a decade, Nada only resurfaced as a character in an intriguing story, nothing more.

Then in 2015, while living in Los Angeles, Heba discovered past-life regression therapy, which uses hypnosis to help people recall memories from past lives. The idea, practitioners say, is that if you are grappling with trauma in this life, you may be able to find the root of the problem in patterns or recurring characters from previous lives. Heba realized there were people all around the world, not just from our small town in Lebanon, who also believed in reincarnation. She quickly became certified in past-life regression and, after years of trying not to think about reincarnation, found comfort in its ability to heal.

On the other side of the country, I was starting a career in journalism, and was ambivalent about Heba’s new profession. I wondered why I had accepted her experience with Nada so matter-of-factly without looking into it further. Questions nagged at me: How do I explain something I don’t understand? Are someone else’s memories enough evidence of them having a reincarnated soul? It wasn’t until this past year, while my sister and I were living under the same roof again, that I started to truly reconcile our worldviews.

Before that, living on my own over the past several years meant I could carefully curate my life, and engage only with people who shared my beliefs, mainly journalism colleagues who prioritized evidence-based facts. I thought I was open-minded — until I had to discuss politics and spirituality with my family around the dinner table.

Last December, during the great conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn, the first time in 800 years the two planets aligned incredibly close to each other and were visible in the sky, I joined Heba and our pandemic pod for a ceremony at a friend’s house. We sat in a circle, drew cards from an oracle deck and wrote down our reflections and hopes in an attempt to manifest our goals for 2021.

It was new and refreshing for me; it felt like much-needed talk therapy after an isolating year. And, my oracle cards were freakishly on point. The first said “Growth,” and mentioned leaving behind antiquated relationships, beliefs or systems. The beliefs I needed to let go of were not the spiritual ones though.

I still have questions — many questions — about past-life regression therapy, but I support Heba and her work. Some of my closest friends have become her clients. She has repeatedly offered to conduct a session with me, but I don’t think I believe in the therapy enough to go under. And if I do, I’m afraid of what I would discover. This life has been challenging enough at times, I don’t know that I could bear the memories of another one.

I also drew a second card that night: “Boundaries.” Heba and I glanced at each other. The card displayed a symbol of a red jaguar, its fangs out. As my friend read the card aloud, I was amazed by how elegantly it spoke to my struggle to be independent from my family while accepting them. The jaguar “has a healthy sense of boundaries and respects magic and the unknown,” it said. I may not be ready to confront my past lives, but at least I’m more open to having fuller experiences in this one.

Samsung Galaxy A52 5G in for review - GSMArena.com news - GSMArena.com

Say hello to the Samsung Galaxy A52 5G, the latest arrival at HQ.

It's got several differences to the 4G-only Samsung Galaxy A52, which we reviewed in March, even though the colors match.

The biggest differences are that the 5G model gets faster 120Hz refresh rate on its 6.5-inch Super AMOLED and that is has a 5G-ready Snapdragon 750G in place of the Snapdragon 720G of the 4G model.

For the €450 starting price, the unboxing is underwhelming. You get a SIM tool, a USB cable and a 15W charger. That's one slow charger and no case, but that's also the norm with Samsung's A series.

Samsung Galaxy A52 5G in for review

Thanks to a competent Snapdragon, a high refresh rate and Samsung's mature OneUI, the Galaxy A52 5G is a zippy performer.

The phone also feels lighter than its 189g would suggest, and we love the matte finish on the back panel. The glossy side frame lets it down a bit, but we can forgive it in this color.

Samsung Galaxy A52 5G in for review

We'll go over the performance of the 4,500mAh battery and the triple rear cameras (that fourth one is a depth sensor, which doesn't count in our books). But given the 105 hour rating achieved by the Galaxy A52 4G and the solid impression the cameras gave us in that review, we're hopeful that the Galaxy A52 5G will perform just as good.

Poll: What’s your favorite Apple product from 2021 so far? - 9to5Mac

As Apple is expected to launch new iPhones, Apple Watch, Macs, and even a new AirPods in the second half of 2021, now serves as a good time to look back at what Apple has already released this year. Today, we want to know: which of the products the company has already released this year is your favorite so far?

The first products Apple announced in 2021 were during the Spring Loaded event, where the company unveiled the AirTag, the new Apple TV 4K, the 24-inch iMac, a new color for the iPhone 12 line, and the brand new M1 iPad Pros.

The Apple AirTag has a reasonable price point with unreasonably-priced accessories. The smart tracker uses the U1 chip, has a year-battery life, and fully integrates with the iPhone and the Find My app. AirTag is a good accessory for keychains, headphones, bags, and more

The second-generation Apple TV 4K introduces a brand new Siri Remote. With a faster processor as well, this is the perfect upgrade for those who’re waiting for a new set-top box from Apple.

After almost a decade, Apple redesigned the iMac, with a 24-inch version. With seven new colors, a new Magic Keyboard, Mouse, and Trackpad options, it has better performance than its previous model thanks to the M1 chip and a nicer 1080p FaceTime HD camera.

The iPad Pro also received a major update. Both the models have the M1 chip, 50% faster than the A12Z Bionic in the fourth-generation iPad Pro, a new Thunderbolt port, and 5G support. The 12.9-inch model received a Liquid Retina XDR display that uses mini-LED technology.

Although it’s just a color update, the iPhone 12 is now available in purple. Whether you were waiting a bit more to upgrade your iPhone, was it a new color enough to buy a new iPhone a few months before the next big update from Apple? Of course, it has the A14 chip, cameras that can shoot Night Mode, and a tweaked design that resembles the iPhone 4 and 5.

Recently, Apple also launched a new MagSafe Battery Pack for the iPhone 12. Although our video review didn’t praise the Smart Battery Case replacement for the newer iPhones, it’s still the only new MagSafe accessory launched by Apple in 2021 so far.

The company also introduced new Apple Watch bands, including new bands for Black History Month, Pride Month, and the Olympics.

It’s also important to mention Beats Studio Buds. At a lower price point than AirPods Pro, this is the first Beats earbuds with ANC and Transparency mode in a compact form-factor and great battery life, as you can see in our review here.

Which is your favorite Apple product from 2021 so far? Vote in the poll and tell us in the comment section below.

The perfect storm striking World of Warcraft - BBC News

Sylvanas Windrunner
Blizzard

There's trouble in the World of Warcraft. Not from a rampaging dragon or a demon army attacking the land of Azeroth, but from some unhappy players who, after 17 years, have had enough.

On YouTube, Reddit and Twitter, there are stories about people leaving the game. Some cite long delays for new content in a game that charges a monthly fee; others are annoyed at a lack of communication.

Players have been flocking to competing games in larger numbers than ever - led by a wave of famous streamers and content creators jumping ship.

Then, the allegations of widespread sexual harassment and discrimination at Activision Blizzard came.

As Scott Johnson, host of popular MMO podcast The Instance, put it: "You have the perfect storm for a lot of players to hang up their Azeroth gear for good and stake out for a new place to play."

'Drastic' dip

Activision Blizzard has not released official player counts for World of Warcraft (WoW) for years. But it does tell investors how many "monthly active users" all of its games have every quarter.

Those figures show that its games lost two million players in three months.

New numbers on how many active players it has across its portfolio of games are due out soon, when the firm announces its latest quarterly results.

WoW is still making plenty of money - revenue is up - so it's possible those numbers mean some of its other games are suffering rather than WoW.

"It's impossible to see the real exodus stats," Scott admitted. "But based on things I have heard inside and outside the company, this might be the most drastic dip they've yet experienced."

He doesn't believe the dissatisfaction is down to any one thing - but that after so many years, players are used to every twist on the core gameplay.

"You are still iterating on the same basic systems and I think players are hitting a point of 'been there, done that' that might be more widespread than in years past," he said.

And then there's the competition - offering "similar yet new experiences".

'Insane' growth

Final Fantasy XIV is arguably WoW's most like-for-like competitor. At launch in 2010, it was famously so bad that the developers "destroyed the world" to rebuild the game from square one - a rags-to-riches redemption story that has since attracted millions of players.

But all of a sudden, it's seen player numbers surge during what should be a quiet time for the game - its next big expansion is not due for months.

Zepla, an FFXIV YouTube creator and streamer, said "the last few weeks have been insane."

"We usually get a lot of new players when an expansion comes, but this surpasses even that," she said.

The game is so popular that it temporarily stopped selling new copies. Director Naoki Yoshida issued a heartfelt apology for server issues caused by the "staggering and unexpected" influx of new players.

It's not the only MMO suffering from sudden success.

New World, Amazon's first attempt in the field, hasn't even launched yet. But its beta test period saw it overwhelmed with server issues as it hit nearly 200,000 players joining the game at once.

Zepla was herself once a WoW player - but left years ago for FFXIV during its poorly-received Warlords of Draenor expansion. She thinks many players have been frustrated for years.

"Common complaints have included frustration with poor class balance, 'out of touch' developers, and needlessly complex, RNG-heavy game systems. Put simply, many players haven't felt listened to. They've not felt their time has been respected. And they are tired."

Popular streamers have fuelled some of this interest. Well-known WoW player Asmongold has been credited with driving many players to both FFXIV and New World in recent weeks.

"So the WoW community had already heard good things about FFXIV," Zepla said, "and now in light of recent events, they may be searching for a new MMO in earnest."

And then, amid all this, came the sexual harassment scandal that hit the community hard.

Virtual picket lines

Scott Johnson has been making WoW content online since 2004. He says he chaired a panel at Blizzard's annual fan festival in 2018 with one of the people named in the allegations - something he now sees in a new light. As someone who plays an active role in the community, he says he personally knows some of the women who were victims.

"Speaking for me, I've never felt this level of anger and disappointment in my professional career as I did in the wake of these allegations," he said.

Morale among the the community is "the lowest it's ever been. Full stop. Blizzard has had its stumbles over the years, but nothing like this."

On Twitter, he posted one of his illustrations - a shattered Hearthstone, the tool WoW players use to return home. It's been retweeted a thousand times.

He's not alone in taking a break, at least from Azeroth.

Prolific WoW YouTuber MadSeason this week declared he was quitting the game - in a video made before the California legal case was made public.

Influential UK streamer Preach is also among those to announce he would no longer cover WoW, describing the sexual harassment allegations as "the straw that broke the camel's back".

Some players are debating a boycott, drawing virtual "picket lines" to not enter Blizzard's games.

Zepla, for her part, thinks a boycott is justified - but "I don't believe it's the only way".

Some content creators "have chosen to stay in the community as they feel they can use their platforms to amplify the voices of those who are speaking out against injustice," she explains.

"Demanding accountability from within is another way to make a positive difference here."

These are practical decisions, too - changing games as a creator can be a risky move, with no guarantee your audience will follow.

Like family

So is it the end of the world (of Warcraft)?

"I'd bet that the game's best years are well behind it," Scott says - but he doubts it will vanish.

"While some players will be taking massive breaks, or leaving for good, there are others whose entire social circle is in the game - and leaving it would be like leaving family."

But he doesn't think it's the end for Azeroth.

"It will bleed, be injured, and maybe forever scarred, but I think it will likely live on one way or the other."

When WoW eventually does disappear and its servers are switched off - perhaps many years from now - the impact it had on the industry will live on.

Amid all these troubles, a video from FFXIV director Yoshi-P has been widely shared.

"Without World of Warcraft, [FFXIV] would not exist," he said in the video translated by a fan. "WoW was the game we constantly looked up to.

"Saying we won or lost to WoW is off-base to start with, because they were the game we aspired to be."

Google officially pairs Stadia Controller and Chromecast as a $100 deal - The Verge

Google has recently been selling a combo-package of the Stadia Controller and 2020 Chromecast as a limited-time promotion. But as spotted by 9to5Google, the company has now made the pair a permanent bundle that it’s calling the “play and watch” package.

For $99.99, you get both the controller and streaming dongle. That’s a savings of $19 compared to buying both products separately. Google is also promoting the Chromecast ethernet adapter as a recommended accessory; if you want the absolute best Stadia experience, it’s probably a smart buy — and it’s a mere $9.99 ($10 off) when purchased alongside the bundle.

In an effort to clear out inventory of the old, puck-shaped Chromecast Ultra, Google is discounting its Stadia Premiere Edition bundle yet again to $79.99. I’d definitely recommend the newer Chromecast with Google TV over the older one. The streaming experience is much richer and more comprehensive on the newer device. But if you’re strictly using it as a gateway to Stadia, the $79.99 deal might be worth hopping on.

Remember that Google’s game streaming service now supports select Android TV products as well. So if you’ve got a TV running that software, all you really need to get going is Google’s controller or a compatible third-party Bluetooth gamepad.

S Pen Pro details surface, including pricing - GSMArena.com news - GSMArena.com

A recent tweet revealed some spicy details around the upcoming S Pen Pro - Samsung's stylus that can be used with the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold3. Interestingly, the post went unnoticed for days but it comes from a fairly reliable source.

S Pen Pro details surface, including pricing

The active stylus is said to feature a thin 0.7mm tip that shouldn't damage the handset's foldable screen, supports 4096 pressure levels and charges over USB-C, which is kind of unexpected. Of course, the S Pen Pro will be sold separately and will attach magnetically onto compatible cases. The post ends with an estimated price of £70 in the UK.

For comparison, the standard S Pen costs around £35 right now and has the same 0.7mm tip and recognizes 4096 pressure levels. We are also pretty sure that the new S Pen Pro offers Bluetooth connectivity for remote control features and gestures but it's still unclear exactly what makes the new stylus "Pro" aside from the fact that it won't hurt the Z Fold3's screen.

Samsung has gone for an impressionist vibe with the new wallpapers for the upcoming foldable devices. It’s keeping that butterfly silhouette for the Galaxy Z Fold 3’s wallpapers as we’ve seen with the Galaxy Z Fold 2. It just appears to be more ornate and as if it’s been painted by hand.

We get similar vibes from the Galaxy Z Flip 3 wallpapers. The colors are vibrant and the abstract design really makes them look quite unique. The Galaxy Z Flip 3 wallpapers are available in four different color combinations.

You can download them now and start using them on your existing foldable devices should you so desire. They’ll only really fit the Galaxy Z Fold 2 and the Galaxy Z Flip. This leak includes the wallpaper for the Galaxy Z Fold 3’s cover display as well. The color and design is consistent with the wallpaper for the internal foldable display.

New destructive Meteor wiper malware used in Iranian railway attack - BleepingComputer

Meteor

A new file wiping malware called Meteor was discovered used in the recent attacks against Iran's railway system.

Earlier this month, Iran's transport ministry and national train system suffered a cyberattack, causing the agency's websites to shut down and disrupting train service. The threat actors also displayed messages on the railway's message boards stating that trains were delayed or canceled due to a cyberattack.

Some of these messages told passengers to call a phone number for more information, which is for the office of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

In addition to trolling the railway, the threat actors locked Windows devices on the network with a lock screen that prevented access to the device.

New Meteor wiper used in Iran attacks

In a new report by SentinelOne, security researcher Juan Andres Guerrero-Saade  revealed that the cyberattack on Iran utilized a previously unseen file wiper called Meteor.

A wiper is malware that intentionally deletes files on a computer and causes it to become unbootable.

Unlike ransomware attacks, destructive wiper attacks are not used to generate revenue for the attackers. Instead, their goal is to cause chaos for an organization or to distract admins while another attack is taking place.

While Iranian cybersecurity firm Aman Pardaz previously analyzed the wiper, SentinelOne could find additional missing components to provide a clearer picture of the attack.

"Despite a lack of specific indicators of compromise, we were able to recover most of the attack components described in the post along with additional components they had missed," explains Guerrero-Saade in SentinelOne's research.

"Behind this outlandish tale of stopped trains and glib trolls, we found the fingerprints of an unfamiliar attacker."

The attack itself is dubbed 'MeteorExpress,' and utilizes a toolkit of batch files and executables to wipe a system, lock the device's Master Boot Record (MBR), and install a screen locker.

Source: SentinelOne

To start the attack, threat actors extracted a RAR archive protected with the 'hackemall' password. The attackers then added these files to a network share accessible to the rest of the computers on the Iranian railway's network.

The threat actor then configured Windows group policies to launch a setup.bat batch file that would then copy various executables and batch files to the local device and execute them.

Setup.bat batch file
Setup.bat batch file
Source: SentinelOne

As part of this process, the batch files would go through the following steps:

  • Check if Kaspersky antivirus was installed and terminate the attack if found.
  • Disconnect the device from the network.
  • Add Windows Defender exclusions to prevent the malware from being detected.
  • Extract various malware executables and batch files to the system.
  • Clear Windows event logs.
  • Delete a scheduled task called ‘AnalyzeAll’ under the Windows Power Efficiency Diagnostics directory.
  • Use Sysinternals 'Sync' tool to flush the filesystem cache to the disk.
  • Launche the Meteor wiper (env.exe or msapp.exe), MBR locker (nti.exe), and screen locker (mssetup.exe) on the computer.

When completed, the device will be unbootable, its file deleted, and a screen locker installed that displays the following wallpaper background before the computer is rebooted for the first time.

MeteorExpress screen locker
MeteorExpress screen locker
Source: SentinelOne

While SentinelOne was unable to find the 'nti.exe' MBR locker, the researchers from Aman Pardaz claim that it shares overlap with the notorious NotPetya wiper.

"One interesting claim in the Padvish blog is that the manner in which nti.exe corrupts the MBR is by overwriting the same sectors as the infamous NotPetya," explained Guerrero-Saade.

"While one’s first instinct might be to assume that the NotPetya operators were involved or that this is an attempt at a false flag operation, it’s important to remember that NotPetya’s MBR corrupting scheme was mostly cribbed from the original Petya used for criminal operations."

Initially thought to be a ransomware attack, NotPetya was a wiper that wreaked havoc across the globe in 2017 by spreading to exposed networks via NSA's ETERNALBLUE exploit and encrypting devices.

In 2020, the USA indicted six Russian GRU intelligence operatives believed to be part of the elite Russian hacking group known as "Sandworm" for the NotPetya attack.

At this time, the motive for the Meteor wiper attacks on Iran's railway is not clear, and the attacks have not been attributed to any particular group or country.

"We cannot yet make out the shape of this adversary across the fog. Perhaps it’s an unscrupulous mercenary group. Or the latent effects of external training coming to bear on a region’s nascent operators," concludes SentinelOne's report.

"At this time, any form of attribution is pure speculation and threatens to oversimplify a raging conflict between multiple countries with vested interests, means, and motive."

Google sends out new round of invites to join ‘Pixel Superfans’ community - 9to5Google

Google has operated a “community” of the Pixel’s “biggest fans” since at least 2019 — if not earlier. Earlier this week, Made by Google launched a new round of invites to join “Pixel Superfans.”

According to an email we’ve seen, the invite to join Google’s Pixel Superfans community was sent out via the usual googlepixel-noreply@google.com address used for marketing new products and quarterly Feature Drops, as well as the “welcome to your new Pixel [model]” introduction with tips after setting up a phone.

The message touts “access to special Google events.” One recent event, according to social media posts from people there, was a tour of Google Store Chelsea a day before it opened.  Meanwhile, the company hosted a “special Pixel event” in Mountain View the day after Made by Google 2019 where people got a hands-on opportunity and chance to “meet the people behind it.”

“Perks” are also touted with Superfans last year getting deconstructed Pixel 4a, 4a 5G, and 5 prints as a holiday gift. Lastly, the email cites Q&A sessions with product teams and the “opportunity to tell [Google] what matters most to you,” i.e. provide direct feedback.

This week’s email links to a form that — among other questions — asks what Made by Google products you’ve owned. Besides Pixel phones and Buds, options include Nest Smart Displays and Home speakers, as well as Chromecast, Google/Nest Wifi, and Stadia.

The criteria for joining is unclear and could be based on how many Pixel phones you’ve owned.

In terms of logistics, Pixel Superfans operates over Facebook Groups. Such official fan communities are common with HTC Elevate being a historical example, while Qualcomm hosts a rather public “Snapdragon Insiders” program. This led to a “Smartphone for Snapdragon Insiders” that’s more or less an existing device with some tweaks.

Hackers used never-before-seen wiper in recent attack on Iranian train system - OODA Loop

CyberNews Briefs

Researchers at cybersecurity company SentinelOne recently released a report detailing a recent cyberattack on Iran’s train system. The report identifies a new threat actor dubbed MeteorExpress and a previously unknown wiper. The attack was initially reported by local news outlets on July 9, stating that hackers were defacing display screens in train stations. The messages on the screens allegedly urged passengers to call ‘64411,’ which is the phone number of Iranian Supreme Leader Khamenei’s office. Train services were also disrupted as a result of the attack. The next day, the hackers took the operation one step further and took down the website of the country’s transport ministry.

Media outlets reported that the ministry’s portal and sub-portals were taken offline after the attack. SentinelOne found that the threat actors behind the attack used a wiper referred to as Meteor, claiming that the tool was developed within the past three years. Researchers stated that they were unable to find evidence linking the activity with a previously identified threat group. This, among other indications, led the researchers to believe that the malicious actors are unfamiliar.

Chinese augmented reality glasses maker Nreal looks to go public within 5 years, CEO says - CNBC

SHANGHAI — Nreal, a Chinese company making glasses for so-called augmented reality experiences, is looking to go public within five years, its CEO told CNBC.

"We're thinking this is really a major tech market and really looking forward to what's going to happen in the next 10 to 15 years. Very exciting – I think its more like '06, '07 of the smartphone business," Chi Xu, CEO of Nreal said.

"We see a lot of good opportunities and, definitely, we're thinking the market size is going to be massive. And we have this opportunity and we want to take this to the final end."

He said an initial public offering could come in "less than 5 years."

The company's flagship product is a pair of lightweight glasses called Nreal Light, which has been released in a handful of markets including South Korea and Japan. Nreal says its glasses allow users to experience "mixed reality" where digital images are superimposed over the real world.

The Nreal Light connects to a smartphone. One of the immediate uses frees people from being tied to their small smartphone screens.

"Whatever you're displaying in the cellphone screen in front of you, you put that in front of your face, into a massive screen, and that can be 3D, that can be ultra-high definition," Xu said.

Nreal's ambitions pit it against technology giants that see a bright future in augmented reality. Apple CEO Tim Cook has called AR the "next big thing" and the iPhone giant is reportedly working on a headset. Facebook, Microsoft, Google and other technology companies are all investing in AR.

But current headsets on the market are expensive and often bulky. Nreal is hoping its portable nature will appeal to consumers. The price varies by market depending on how it is distributed. For example, in Japan the headset costs around $700. But in South Korea, the device can be purchased through a telecom operator's plan which subsidizes the headset to around $300.

Business model

Nreal has a platform for developers to create apps for the headset's operating system called Nebula.

"It's very similar to what Apple has been doing for smartphone," Xu said. "We offer a platform where people use that for different kinds of experiences and developers — they can deploy, they can develop different content onto the field."

Apple not only makes money from sales of its iPhones and other hardware but it also gets revenue from commissions off its App Store.

Nreal has some notable backers. Kuaishou, the short-video platform in China and iQiyi, a video streaming service, are among the company's investors. Xu said Nreal would be working with both Kuaishou and iQiyi.

"As we mentioned, not only are we going to provide the hardware. We want to bundle different services with the glasses. So take video for example, whether it's a long video or short video. We're thinking glasses are a much better terminal to experience the video in," the CEO said.

"So that's why we'll be working with those giants, really working on the new interface."

The Nikon Z9 Seen In Action at the Tokyo Olympics - PetaPixel

While it is well-known that the Canon EOS R3 is being tested at the Olympics, Nikon has been a bit coyer with the status of its Z9. Over the past day, multiple photos have emerged that show that what is likely a functional prototype is indeed in attendance, however.

Photolari has published two separate sets of images that show that there is at least one functional model of the Z9 at the Olympics. These recent images grant a first look at what the rear of the camera looks like, something that Nikon has yet to officially provide.

Images that were posted to Twitter but have since been removed were nabbed by Nikon Rumors, and show a very close-up look at what the back of Nikon’s upcoming sports-focused camera. The photo is still in use on Photolari as part of a larger story on the camera, however.

“Although before sharing them we make the pertinent checks — the photo is real, current and we believe we know its origin and have the green light — a misunderstanding lead us to make an unforgivable mistake for a media: we are actually using the photo without permission from its author or author,” Photolari writes, explaining why the original tweet was removed.

More recently, two additional images that show the camera set up and on tripods at a swimming event were published, which not only further lend credence to the belief that the prototype is functional but also provide another angle that Nikon has not yet officially shared.

It is unclear if these photos are of the same camera that was spotted the day before, but the inclusion of what Photolari calls “something weird” on the back of the camera is consistent between the two sets of images: the border of the LCD appears to be taped down for some reason.

Looking closely, it isn’t actually clear if the LCD on this particular Z9 prototype articulates. Nikon’s previous sports-focused full-size cameras have not featured either a simple articulating screen or a full vari-angle screen, so not having one on the new mirrorless Z9 would follow that trend.

These photos reveal a few other details that Nikon fans are probably excited to see. First, that aforementioned rear LCD is particularly large, so even if it does not articulate it does offer a lot of real estate for live view and for photo review. The design has a more hard-edged look to it, in contrast with the photos seen of the EOS R3, which is more rounded and soft. The button layout is quite similar to what is found on the Z7 II, but the increased size of the camera thanks to the integrated battery grip has allowed Nikon to add a second multi-directional joystick below the magnify buttons on the right side. There are also four additional buttons that are below the rear LCD.

PetaPixel reached out to Nikon for comment, but the company did not immediately respond.

Nikon has been quiet about the Z9 camera since it announced its development earlier this year. Other than promising it will be able to shoot 8K video, will feature a newly-developed stacked CMOS sensor, and will have a new image-processing engine, no other details were provided. That said, Nikon seems to understand the enormous pressure to make the camera special. The Nikon Z9 is expected to be officially announced in November.

Studio Cameras

Let’s start with the new cameras. Blackmagic has released two new broadcast-oriented cameras with up to 4KUHD capture: the Studio Camera 4K Plus and the Studio Camera 4K Pro. Both models are designed to speed your setup and feature a compact and lightweight reinforced carbon fiber exterior, both physical control knobs and a 7" touchscreen with full camera control, a tripod plate system, a folding sunshade, 15mm LWS rod clamps, and an MFT (Micro Four Thirds) lens mount. Compared to earlier studio cameras, these latest models feature excellent low-light capture with up to 25,600 ISO and +36dB gain, perfect for available light event capture and dimmer locations. A built-in color corrector is handy for live events and 13 stops of dynamic range, LUT input, and Gen 5 color science give you cinematic image control. Both cameras feature 10G Internet, a larger, more visible tally light, and improved audio options including XLR inputs.

Blackmagic Design Studio Camera 4K Pro

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1657122-REG/blackmagic_design_studio_camera_4k_pro.html

Key Features

  • Micro Four Thirds Lens Mount
  • Capture up to UHD 4K 3840 x 2160p60
  • 7" High-Brightness HDR Touchscreen LCD
  • Record to External USB Type-C Disks

  • XLR & 3.5mm Audio Input, Built-In Mics
  • Built-In DaVinci Resolve Color Corrector
  • Large Tally Light, 5-Pin Headset Plug
  • Light Carbon Fiber Polycarbonate Body

How do these two new cameras differ? The Studio Camera 4K Plus is designed to work with Blackmagic’s ATEM Mini Pro switcher and so eliminates some of the 4K Pro camera features duplicated in the ATEM like 12G-SDI input and the XLR audio inputs.

Both cameras are compatible with the upcoming Studio Converter and pedestal-style Zoom and Focus Controls. The Studio Converter unit enables you to power and control the Studio cameras using a single copper ethernet cable―ideal for arenas and other venues that may lack power at your camera position and where multiple cables would present a tripping hazard. The zoom and focus controls feature solid, smooth movement and dual USB Type-C ports for daisy-chaining units. Use these controls to add broadcast-style control to widely available still photo MFT-mount lenses.

Hyperdeck Studio

Blackmagic has upped recording and playback options with four new Hyperdeck Studio models. All feature user-inspired touches like a front 3.5mm headphone jack and a speaker with level control.

The Hyperdeck Studio Mini totally updates the prior version with faster uploading, a timecode generator, a USB3 output for recording to flash drives, and the ability to stack multiple units for extended or ISO recording. It retains the reference generator, HD/SDI monitor outputs, and dual media slots of its predecessor but has 3G-SDI instead of 6G-SDI outputs.

Expanded to a 1/2 rack size (from 1/3 RU) the Hyperdeck Studio HD Plus has a larger form with easier to use front panel controls, 6G-SDI input/output, and an HDMI input compatible with the ATEM Mini and consumer-style cameras. The Studio Plus supports the space-saving H.264 SDI format and can output up to UHD 4K30 in select file formats. Multiple units can be looped for control via the reference and timecode interfaces.

Designed as a replacement for both the HD Studio and Studio Pro models, the 6D-SDI HyperDeck Studio HD Pro retains the dual SSD drives, dual SD card slots, and dynamic recording light indicator of its predecessors. It adds new formats, onscreen overlays, faster Internet, and new control options. It also sports a new search dial (control wheel) with a solid-feeling mass and a clutch that offers shuttle, jog, and scroll modes for comfortable, precise footage and menu control.

For top-of-the line recording, go for the HyperDeck Studio 4K Pro. Identical to the HD Pro in form, the 4K Pro ups the ante with 12G-SDI input and offers redundant AC power supplies plus a DC power input. The dual-link 12G outputs provide 4:4:4 playback capable of handling graphics overlays and H.264/H.265 file playback from computer inputs. A future software update will add 10G Internet and faster USB Type-C interfaces. A new Universal Shelf Rack will also be debuting in a few months.

Web Presenter 4K

Livestreaming at resolutions up to UHD 4K with up to 12G-SDI input can now be handled with the Web Presenter 4K. With a built-in compression engine, this unit can stream directly to social media platforms and automatically up- or down-converts your footage if necessary. It incorporates USB connections for linking to a web camera and outputs display parameters via a monitor output. You can also stream using your phone’s 4/5G mobile data with the Web Presenter 4K.
