Save Over $100 on a Refurb Microsoft Surface 3 Two-in-One Laptop - CNET

surface-3
Microsoft

Looking for an affordable, two-in-one laptop that's great for light work and online browsing, but want more versatility than a Chromebook offers? While they're certainly not cutting edge anymore, if most of your work is going to be online, then previous generation laptops like this Microsoft Surface 3 still boast specs and features that are more than sufficient. And by opting for a refurbished model, you can find one at a great value.

Now through March 1, Woot has refurb models of the Microsoft Surface 3 on sale starting as low as $160 -- nearly half the price of what it would cost you to buy one that's brand new.

The Microsoft Surface 3 balances its tablet and laptop capabilities well. With a compact 10.8-inch display, up to 10 hours of battery life and weighing only 1.37 pounds, its great for sliding into your backpack and taking care of work while you're on the go. It comes equipped with 4GB of RAM and a 64GB SSD, though it does have a microSD slot for expanded external storage. Plus it features a USB-A port and a headphone jack, which is perfect if you're not sold on wireless headphones quite yet.

There are two different refurb tiers available for this sale: grade A and grade B. According to Woot, grade A means the device has been inspected and has minimal cosmetic damage, whereas grade B means it will have noticeable scratches dents or dings. However, both grades are ensured to be in full working condition, so if looks aren't as important to you, either is a great value. Grade B starts at $160, while grade A starts at $190. And for $20 more, you can bundle either with the detachable keyboard.

These new Nokia mobiles remind us what 'cheap phone' really means - TechRadar

Audio player loading…

With the cheap phone market dominated by big Chinese names like Redmi, Realme and Pocophone, it can be easy to forget about the stalwart mobile manufacturers – but HMD Global has just given us a reason to pay it some heed.

HMD Global, which makes Nokia phones, debuted three new super-budget mobiles as part of annual tech conference MWC 2022.

These new mobiles are the Nokia C2 2nd Edition (the original came in 2020), Nokia C21, and Nokia C21 Plus – they're all part of the company's C line, which is its lowest-end collection, compared to the slightly-higher-end G and verging-on-mid-range X families.

As we said, these are super affordable handsets. The first and last phones are launching in the UK, and we have their prices as £75 (roughly $100, AU$140) and £100 (around $130, AU$190) respectively.

Here are their specs, so you can see how they compare:

TCL 30 series specs
Phone Screen Rear cameras Front-facing camera RAM / ROM Battery Chipset Fingerprint scanner Connectivity
Nokia C2 2nd Edition 5.7-inch HD 60Hz 5MP main 2MP 1,2GB / 32GB (expandable up to 256GB) 2,400mAh Unspecified None 4G
Nokia C21 6.5-inch HD+ 60Hz 8MP main 5MP 2,3GB / 32, 64GB (expandable up to 256GB) 3,000mAh Unspecified Rear
Nokia C21 Plus 6.5-inch HD+ 60Hz 13MP main, 2MP depth 5MP 2,3,4GB / 32,64GB (expandable up to 256GB) 4,000mAh, 5,050mAh Unspecified Rear-mounted 4G

If you're confused about the C21 Plus' battery situation, it seems that you can opt between two sizes, just like how many mobiles offer you a choice in RAM and storage.

In an age where every budget phone maker is trying to put out a super-flashy, specs-heavy monster, it's slightly refreshing to see genuine true budget phones. Seriously, how many phones do you see nowadays with just 1GB RAM, or with a single rear camera?

Obviously, these devices aren't going to run like your iPhone or Samsung Galaxy device, but they're designed for people who don't need a best-in-class smartphone. They're cheap and cheery, perhaps for seniors or technophobes who can't totally put off the tech-ification of the world.

Alongside the new smartphones, HMD Global unveiled a few headphones and earbuds, and they're all affordable devices just like their mobile counterparts.

The Nokia phones are coming to the UK starting in April, but we don't know if they'll be arriving elsewhere, so we'll have to wait and see.

These aren't the only cheap phones we've seen at MWC, either. TCL unveiled its own selection with impressive rear cameras and big batteries, and that's just the tip of the iceberg. We're expecting more to launch all the time, so stay tuned in the coming days for more.

This is the lowest price we've seen on the Surface Pro 8 - Creative Bloq

The Surface Pro 8 made a big impression when it was released in October, offering big improvements on Microsoft's previous device. It isn't cheap, but at the prices offered on Amazon right now, I think I'm convinced. Right now you can grab the Surface Pro 8 with a 128GB SSD for just $859.99 at Amazon, a saving of $240. That's the lowest price we've seen on this configuration since the tablet's launch.

And if you need more storage space, now's the time to buy too, because Amazon's dropped the price of the 256GB version too, cutting the price by $200.99 to just $999.

And if you're in the UK, there's no need to miss out. If you're very quick you can save a massive £250 on the more capacious 556GB version of the Surface Pro 8, now £1,049 at Amazon UK . This one's a limited-time deal that ends at 1pm on Sunday, so don't dawdle if you've had your eye on this tablet.

Why are these such good deals? Well, besides the size of the saving, the Surface Pro 8 is a brilliant device for working on the go. It's a tablet that you can use with a stylus for drawing and note-taking, but it runs Windows, so instead of being restricted to mobile apps, you can use fully fledged desktop software.

Add in the Surface Pro Type Cover and you've basically got a super slim and portable laptop that has the power to handle all kinds of work on the move. It's also a big step up from the previous Surface Pro 7, with improved performance and a better display (see our Surface Pro 8 review and our Surface Pro 7 vs Surface Pro 8 comparison for more on why we rate it).

See more details on the best current prices below.

Tech News | Microsoft is Testing Quick Settings Bluetooth Device List for Windows 11 Insiders - LatestLY

Washington [US], February 26 (ANI): Microsoft is rolling out its test build of Windows 11 to its Insiders and the update promises to make Bluetooth devices easier to access.

As per The Verge, Windows 11 Build 22563 will surface a list of Bluetooth devices right into the Quick Settings menu of the taskbar, complete with visible battery levels for supported devices.

Also Read | PSG vs St-Etienne, Ligue 1 2021-22 Free Live Streaming Online: How to Get Match Live Telecast on TV & Football Score Updates in Indian Time?.

This new Bluetooth list allows users to connect to new devices and disconnect to current devices without having to open the full Bluetooth settings menu. It takes a small cue from the way Windows 11's Quick Settings already handles Wi-Fi networks or selecting an audio source.

This is the latest update to come to Windows 11 after just recently bringing new touch gestures and Start menu folders. Bluetooth has been a bit of a sticking point for Windows, often being a bit clunky in its interface -- especially if you switch between a bunch of Bluetooth devices.

Also Read | Empoli FC vs Juventus, Serie A 2021-22 Free Live Streaming Online & Match Time in India: How To Watch Italian League Match Live Telecast on TV & Football Score Updates in IST?.

Microsoft started making big improvements to Bluetooth usability back in Windows 10, though it's taken time to do things like enable quicker, more effortless pairing and add AAC support. This next build of Windows 11 may seem like a small quality-of-life improvement, though it can go a long way toward making Bluetooth connections a smaller pain point for Windows machines.

However, being part of the Windows Insiders testing program doesn't guarantee this new feature rolls out right away -- or even at all. (ANI)

Panasonic Plans to Continue to Support 'Full Micro Four Thirds Lineup' - PetaPixel

Panasonic GH6 in use

Panasonic has confirmed that it doesn’t plan to reserve its development in Micro Four Thirds to just its high-end cameras like the GH5 II and GH6, leaving the door open to successors to its other Lumix cameras.

Plans to Support a Full Line of Cameras

During an online event called Creators Live with Lumix GH6, Panasonic indicated that it plans to continue to support a wide range of Micro Four Thirds cameras and not restrict its development just to high-end products. Spotted by DCLife and 43Rumors, the company’s marketing manager Tomonori Nakanishi seems to commit to bringing new versions of cameras from across Panasonic’s lineup.

“We believe in the diverse possibilities of Micro Four Thirds, and we are developing such diversified products,” Nakanishi says, machine-translated by Google. “In today’s world where full-size machines are becoming more popular in a sense, it may be a unique approach to develop the full-size lineup in-house and at the same time to develop the Micro Four Thirds lineup in full-scale. However, I believe that this approach will allow the ‘GH6’ to establish a very sharp and unique position in the world at this moment.”

It is not clear if these words mean Panasonic will definitively revisit cameras like the GX7, G9, or G100, but fans can hope as these cameras have not seen new versions for several years.

Micro Four Thirds Forever

Nakanishi’s words echo the company’s previous stances behind the smaller-sensor format it was instrumental in founding along with Olympus, now OM Digital Solutions. In 2020, Panasonic publicly stated that Micro Four Thirds was a “precious asset” that it intended to continue to support. In May of last year when Panasonic first announced it was developing the GH6, it did so in concert with the GH5 Mark II as a message of its support of the format into the future.

A Panasonic representative told PetaPixel that as popular as full-frame cameras are (and it has developed full-frame cameras as a response to that demand), there are certain things that the company can do with Micro Four Thirds that are not possible with larger sensors, at least not yet. These include specific metrics on pricing and performance that Panasonic’s leadership thinks are important and have put at the forefront of its development cycle for many years.

While the photography community tends to belittle or downplay Micro Four Thirds, Panasonic regularly assures fans of the format that it has no plans to ever abandon the system.

Messages is pre-installed, but that doesn’t mean your US Galaxy S22 is using Google’s RCS backend - 9to5Google

In a big win for Google, its Messages app is the default client for the Galaxy S22 in the US. However, Google’s RCS backend might not be powering your messaging experience and that might result in an extra step during the set-up process.

Yesterday, Google explained that “GS22 devices will run off of T-Mobile’s proprietary RCS backend, and upon initial setup, users may experience a delay as data is migrated from Google’s RCS backend to T-Mobile’s.”

To resolve and accelerate that migration, users are told to enter their phone number and follow the instructions at messages.google.com/disable-chat, and then “Enable chat features” in Messages settings.

Previously, with the S21 and earlier in the US, Samsung Messages was the default, though things differed abroad. RCS was offered in the app via the carrier backend, but users could install Google Messages from the Play Store and use a backend that Google introduced to speed up RCS deployment worldwide due to carrier inactivity.

That direct approach to get RCS rolled out started in mid-2019 was completed by late 2020. However, carriers have always been allowed to let their RCS backend supersede Google’s once ready/available.

Google told us today that Galaxy S22 users on T-Mobile and AT&T will be using those carriers’ RCS backends, even with the Messages app pre-loaded. However, Verizon users will use the Google RCS backend. Additionally, Galaxy S21 users and earlier on T-Mobile are not being switched over and will remain on Google’s system.

In the grand scheme, which backend is being used does not matter as they are all interoperable (Universal Profile) with one another, but the implementation intricacies are quite interesting. Of note, is how T-Mobile and Google last May signed a big cross-service partnership that covers Messages and RCS, among many other products.

Android Circuit: Leak Confirms Pixel 7 Pro Details, Galaxy S22 Ultra Problems, Oppo’s Find X5 Debuts - Forbes

Taking a look back at seven days of news and headlines across the world of Android, this week’s Android Circuit includes Samsung’s Galaxy S22 breaks records, the S22 Ultra faces problems, Pixel 7 details leak, the big Pixel design secret, Oppo’s Find X5 flagships, reviewing the RedMagic 7 gaming smartphone, and what Android features should iOS have?

Android Circuit is here to remind you of a few of the many things that have happened around Android in the last week (and you can find the weekly Apple news digest here).

Samsung’s Galaxy S22 Breaks Records

Following the launch of the Galaxy S22 family, Samsung will be happy to see that the order books are filling up nicely and breaking records along the way. Its home country of South Korea has seen over one million pre-orders:

"ZDNet reports that over 1.02 million Galaxy S22 units were pre-ordered by eager South Koreans, with over 300,000 units being sold on day one. The last smartphone to achieve the feat was the age-old Galaxy S8 series. Even the foldable Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 came close. The report rounds things off by stating that the Galaxy S22 Ultra was the most sought-after model, accounting for over 60% of the pre-order figures. It doesn’t mention wait times, but it is unlikely that Samsung will keep fans in its base of operations waiting for too long."

(SamMobile).

Samsung’s Galaxy S22 Ultra Problems

Questions are being asked about the performance of some Glaxy S22 Ultra handsets, specifically those that are running Samsung’s own Exynos 2200 system-on-chip. Reviewers and those purchasing in the initial wave are reporting display issues, significant lag, and high battery use on their devices. XDA’s Adam Conway:

"Exynos chipsets aren’t exactly known for being the best of the best, and it’s entirely possible that Samsung was considering canceling it entirely. As it stands though, this €1300 flagship phone is borderline unusable. Apps sometimes crash (including the CPU Throttling Test the first time I ran it), apps take multiple seconds to load, and multi-tasking is a nightmare. I’m not the only person to have issues either, as Nils Ahrensmeier of TechnikNews has complained that the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra is “very laggy”, along with Nicolas La Rocco of ComputerBase‘s complaints that the phone is stuttery and slow at times."

Samsung has acknowledge the display issues and that these will eb addressed in a future software update. There has been no mention on the potential issues that could be limited to the Exynos chipset.

Google Leak Confirms New Pixel Details

Google’s developer preview of Android 13 - 2022’s update to the mobile operating system - has revealed a number of details about the next Pixel handsets. The presumptively named Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro are on their way:

"First, Android 13 revealed that the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro are being developed internally at Google under the codenames ‘Cheetah’ and ‘Panther’. For those keeping track, this represents a shift. The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro codenames were Oriole and Raven while historically every previous Pixel had a name related to sea life. So Google is now switching codename categories with each new Pixel release. "

(Forbes).

The Big Pixel Design Secret

We’re also seeing the first leaks of the Pixel 7 design, and it won’t come as a surprise that the camera bar still features. There’s a good reason for that, as Max Weinberg explains:

"Wanna know something fun? The camera bar was designed to be that large specifically so they could keep that design language for a few years and be able to fit new camera tech in there. They can fit newer, better, bigger sensors and LiDAR without a redesign"

(Twitter).

Oppo’s Big Move

This week saw Oppo announce its flagship Find X5 and Find X5 Pro handsets. Sporting 8 GB or 12 GB of memory, and storage up to 512 GB all backed up by the SnapDragon 8 Gen 1, these are notable smartphones in 2022’s marketplace. Both the Find X5 and Find X5 Pro come with the same camera lenses, but it’s the new MariSilicon X chipset found in the Pro handset that makes things interesting:

"But the real story is found under the hood, where the Oppo Find X5 series debuts the MariSilicon X chip that the company announced last year. That chip allows Oppo to take image and video processing to a new level. Oppo says the chip can improve low-light HDR in big ways, especially when it comes to video recording. A “4K Ultra Night Mode” lives in the Camera app for that purpose. If MariSilicon X delivers even a fraction of the added focus that Google’s Visual Core chip brought to Pixels, it’s sure to be a great addition."

(9to5Google).

The Magic Of Mobile Gaming… In Red

The power of Android means that everyone has a gaming machine in their pocket. But those looking to fully unlock mobile gaming need more from their smartphones. What are the keys to unlocking mobile gaming ? Staying cool and having enough battery power for a long gaming session. Nubia’s answer to this challenge is its new RedMagic 7 gaming phone, which I reviewed earlier this week:

"On the battery front, you have 65W charging out of the box for the battery, although at 4500 mAh the battery feels under capacity. I suspect that is the balancing act needed to have more internal volume both for the cooling systems, which include conductive copper foil, vapour chamber cooling, and perhaps most obviously, a cooling fan that runs at a variable speed to move more air through the system… as well as an RGB ring of lights around the housing to show it in operation if you have the higher specced model.

(Forbes).

And Finally...

Another fun discussion over on Reddit this week, as the community asks which features Android should adopt from iOS; and which features iOS really needs to be inspired by from Android. User Movieboy711 started it all:

"Apple apps integrate really well into other Apple apps. For example, I can set a reminder that will show up when I message someone using iMessage. Apple Notes, Reminders, iMessage, Calendar, and Facetime all work really well with each other. It would be great if Google can do this with their services. They always try then forget that the service exists and makes a new one instead."

(Reddit).

Android Circuit rounds up the news from the Android world every weekend here on Forbes. Don’t forget to follow me so you don’t miss any coverage in the future, and of course read the sister column in Apple Loop! Preorders Double for Samsung Galaxy S22 and Tab S8 Over Last Year's Models - CNET

Samsung S22 and S22 Plus and S22 Ultra compared
Lisa Eadicicco/CNET

Preorders for the Samsung Galaxy S22 are more than double those for last year's Galaxy S21 phones, indicating a strong demand for Samsung's latest additions to its flagship line.

The company did not report exactly how many preorders it has in advance of the phones going on sale tomorrow, but it did say more than 60% are for the top-of-the-line Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, which starts at $1,200 (£1,149, AU$1,849). While the new phone doesn't vastly improve on last year's S21 Ultra – it has a newer chipset, faster charging and slightly better low-light photography – the addition of an S Pen stylus slot makes it a new Note phone in all but name.

Read more: Samsung's Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra should have been a Chromebook

The new Galaxy Tab S8 range also has double the preorders over last year's Tab S7 series with the top-of-the-line iPad Pro rival, the Tab S8 Ultra, accounting for half of them. The new tablets have modest upgrades on their predecessors.

It's not surprising that S22 Ultra and Tab S8 are getting the most preorder attention, as both have the most advanced features and cameras over the more affordable Galaxy S22 and Tab S8.

Whether there will be enough Samsung Galaxy S22 phones to satisfy demand is still a concern as pandemic-related supply chain issues persist. A T-Mobile executive reportedly complained that last year's S21 phones were in "very short supply" by September.

Samsung Galaxy S22 series surpasses 1 million pre-orders in South Korea - GSMArena.com news - GSMArena.com

South Korean outlet ZDnet is now reporting that a whopping 1.02 million Samsung Galaxy S22 series units have been pre-ordered locally. That number is on pace for a new record with 300,000 units being booked on the first day of the campaign.

Samsung Galaxy S22 series surpasses 1 million pre-orders in South Korea

Samsung’s Galaxy S8 series launched back in 2017 actually managed 1.4 million pre-orders but accomplished so in an eleven-day pre-order period while the S22 series did so in just seven. The Galaxy Z Fold3 and Z Flip3 were also close to the 1 million pre-orders mark but failed to reach that record setting number last year.

Samsung’s new Galaxy S22 Ultra accounted for 60% of total pre-orders. The Korean news outlet suggest many long-time Galaxy Note users upgraded to the S22 Ultra. Open sales of the Galaxy S22 series in South Korea start tomorrow, February 25. It will be interesting to see how Samsung handles logistics and how that will affect shipping times.

Android Auto sounds like it could use a tune-up for many Samsung Galaxy S22 users - Android Police

The Samsung Galaxy S22 series officially hits store shelves tomorrow, but if you pre-ordered one, there's a good chance yours was already left on your doorstep. Of course, early adopters always run the risk of facing issues with their phones, and the S22 is no exception. Following reports of screen glitches, some users are noting problems connecting their devices to their car's dashboard display via Android Auto.

According to a tip from a reader and numerous reports on Reddit, Galaxy S22 Ultra owners are facing difficulties when connecting to their car's head unit. Both wired and wireless connections to OEM and third-party displays result in a black image. While touch input still functions, you can't actually see what's on the screen.

Those Reddit reports make it would like a fairly widespread issue, with one user with an early Galaxy S22+ unit mentioning his device also fails to load Android Auto correctly. Older Galaxy phones and other Android devices — including the Pixel 6 — are mentioned as functioning properly, seemingly ruling out other variables. Meanwhile, a thread on Samsung's own forums has counter-reports of people saying it works fine on their unit, so evidently, it's not affecting everyone.

A report on the Android Auto support forums has been marked as a duplicate, linking to a generic troubleshooting page for failed connections. Despite replies being disabled, it's still marked as a trending topic with nearly 100 upvotes as of publishing time. Samsung is yet to comment on this issue, but in the meantime, if you're affected by this issue, you can send feedback on the Android Auto app or make your voice heard in existing threads.

Thanks: Chris

100 million Samsung phones were shipped with a major security flaw - PhoneArena

100 million Samsung phones were shipped with a major security flaw
Samsung is usually pretty keen on security on its devices. However, a new report claims the Korean company has shipped over 100 million devices with a major security flaw.

Thankfully, the flaw has been fixed with a security update in August 2021. A following security patch was released in October of the same year and has further addressed the problem.

According to SamMobile, researchers at Tel Aviv University found that a couple of Galaxy S8, Galaxy S9, Galaxy S10, Galaxy S20, and Galaxy S21 models went to market with a security loophole. This loophole could have potentially allowed hackers to access personal information such as passwords. Read the full report of the researchers here.

The report states that the phones did not store their cryptography keys correctly. The flaw is connected to Samsung’s TrustZone OS (TZOS) which runs alongside Android for improved security on Samsung devices.

It is unknown as to how many if any people were affected by the security breach which was hidden before. We do hope Samsung and other phone brands do not make such a mistake again, as nowadays people are storing pretty sensitive information on their phones, including information about banking accounts, IDs, and credit cards.

Google is ditching Chrome’s data saver mode on Android - The Verge

Google has announced it will soon remove a feature of Chrome for Android that for years helped people cut down on their mobile data usage. Per 9to5Google, Chrome’s “Lite mode” will go away with the release of Chrome version M100 in late March. Lite mode was originally known as Data Saver when Google first introduced it on Android back in 2014.

In those days, many smartphone owners were on tiered data plans and risked extra charges if they went over their monthly allotment. And in some regions, mobile speeds were limited — so Lite mode helped pages load faster by compressing them. In 2015, Google added the option to block images entirely to use even less data.

But Google no longer sees much reason to keep the option around. Unlimited data plans are once again the norm, and the company claims that Chrome has continued to cut back on data usage with default settings.

“In recent years we’ve seen a decrease in cost for mobile data in many countries, and we’ve shipped many improvements to Chrome to further minimize data usage and improve web page loading,” the company wrote on a help page this week. “Although Lite mode is going away, we remain committed to ensuring Chrome can deliver a fast webpage loading experience on mobile.”

Chrome for Android version M100 will be released to the stable channel on March 29th, so Lite mode will remain available until then.
