The Canon EOS R5 C is Now Netflix Approved - PetaPixel

Canon R5 C

Netflix has approved the Canon EOS R5 C for use in its productions, making it the first hybrid Canon camera to make the cut. It joins the Panasonic S1H as the only two approved cameras that are typically categorized as hybrid photo and video cameras.

Canon’s EOS R5 C — which was brought to market last March — has been added to Netflix’s list of approved cameras which allows filmmakers to use Canon hybrid full-frame mirrorless camera for Netflix productions. The addition of the EOS R5 C brings the number of Canon Cinema EOS camera models approved for use on Netflix productions to eight, joining the C500 Mark II, the C300 Mark II, the C70, the C300 Mark II, the C700 FF, and the C700.

Before Canon R5 C approval, the only other Netflix-approved camera that shares a similar body design and designation as a hybrid photo and video camera was Panasonic’s S1H. While there are some “compact” cameras that have been approved, the hybrid camera design has typically not been.

It may come as a surprise to many, but — for example — none of Sony’s Alpha series cameras are Netflix approved, including the highly video-capable Alpha 7S III. Not even Blackmagic’s Pocket Cinema Cameras are approved — they aren’t hybrid cameras but share a similar design — as Netflix has only given the green light to three Blackmagic cameras, all of which are URSA cameras.

Outside of the Canon C70 and the Panasonic BGh1 and BS1H, there are very few truly compact camera options available to Netflix filmmakers, so Canon’s R5 C now joins a rather exclusive club.

Canon EOS R5 C

The addition of the R5 C as Netflix approved comes shortly after Canon released firmware update 1.0.3.1 earlier this week. The update only has one note, but it is significant: it improves the image quality of Canon Log 3 when shooting in XF-AVC or MP4 formats. In short, Canon says it elevates the overall image quality and camera operability for filmmakers.

What Makes a Camera ‘Netflix Approved’?

Last summer, Netflix released a video that explains what goes into the process for cameras approved for use on its productions.

“The most common misconception is the only requirement we have for cameras on our approved list is 4K capture. Now, while capturing at a higher resolution is certainly important to image quality, we know it’s not everything. That’s why resolution is just one of the many attributes we look at when evaluating a camera system,” the company’s camera systems specialist Kris Prygrocki said.

““We do our best to remain as objective as possible by doing a multitude of tests and not just relying on one singular solution. We also make a point to stay in communication with the manufacturer to ensure that we are operating the camera system and testing it in the best way possible to achieve the greatest results.”

Surprisingly, most of the factors that go into approving a camera aren’t related to image quality.

“Does it have proper thermal management? Is it going to overheat on a professional film set? Are we going to have to deal with image correction or lost data all the time? How well supported is the recorded file format in post software? Is there proper color management?”

Netflix’s full explanation can be found in PetaPixel‘s original coverage, and a detailed description of all Netflix-approved cameras can be found on the company’s website.

Canon EOS R5 C is Netflix Approved - YMCinema - News & Insights on Digital Cinema - YMCinema Magazine

One of the most anticipated cameras to be accepted by Netflix has just been approved. Yes- the Canon EOS R5 C has entered the prestige list of one of the authorized main cameras that can shoot for Netflix 4K Originals. Furthermore, the RED Digital Cinema V-Raptor S35 8K was approved as well. Read the Netflix Production Guides below.

Canon EOS R5 C
Canon EOS R5 C

The Canon EOS R5 C was announced at the beginning of 2022. The R5 C is a full-featured still photo camera with all the settings of the R5 EOS mirrorless camera. When switched in the other direction, it becomes a full-frame 8K60 Cinema EOS camera that internally records 12-bit Cinema RAW Light footage. As stated by Canon: “The R5 C marks a special milestone for Canon, as we introduce a high-quality and high-performance hybrid model that combines the video performance and high reliability of the Cinema EOS System and the still image performance of the EOS R5”. Indeed, the camera is a solid hybridization of the R5 and C70 from the cinema line. It has a ‘Cinema’ interface and capabilities, a full-frame sensor, and an 8K resolution. However, for some reason, rumors suggested that the camera has been rejected by Netflix. Anyway, now it got approved. Hence, you can shoot Netflix 4K Originals with it, as the main camera on set.

The RED V-Raptor allows to film in 8K at 120 fps, by utilizing perfectly Super 35 glass.

This iPad Air is as powerful as a laptop, and it's $70 off at Amazon - Livescience.com

It may have been reduced last month, but the iPad Air M1 is in the sales again at Amazon.

Between the expensive iPad Pro M2, the perfectly portable iPad Mini, and a pair of base iPads across ninth and tenth generations, the iPad lineup has never been more full of options - but not all are created equal.

Thankfully, the easiest way to pick the best all-round iPad is to look to the Air - no, not the atmosphere, the iPad Air with M1 chip. It's a powerful tablet with plenty to offer, and it's possibly the best tablet for students, (and unsurprisingly, our guide to the best iPads too).

There was a steeper discount on the 64GB version last month (opens in new tab), but this time around it's the 256GB version that has been discounted at Amazon.

The online retailer is offering the iPad Air M1 256GB with a $70 discount off the MSRP (opens in new tab), bringing the cost down to just $679. Not bad for a tablet with the power of a laptop.

now $679 at Amazon (opens in new tab)

iPad Air M1 - Was $749, now $679 at Amazon (opens in new tab)

Save $70 on the iPad Air M1 tablet and get laptop-class power in a slimline tablet.

While we're expecting an M2 version of the iPad Air in the coming months, there's nothing on the App Store that the iPad Air's M1 chip (the same as the ones you'll find in recent MacBooks and even the current iMac) can't handle.

Whether it's editing photos, jotting down notes with the Apple Pencil (you'll need the second version, which is sold separately), or settling in for some Netflix at the end of the day, the iPad Air with M1 will power through tasks. It'll even run many of them at the same time, using Apple's new Stage Manager feature.

The 10.9-inch display has a resolution of 2360x1640, making it great for watching movies or zooming right in for content, and you can connect up any Bluetooth peripherals, including a mouse and keyboard, for a more laptop-like experience. Looking for something more like a laptop? Be sure to check out our list of the best laptops for students.

There's just a single USB-C port, but if you're happy to provide a dock, you can open up a whole world of possibilities. Need to plug in a keyboard, SD Card reader, external monitor, mouse, and more? It's possible (although the iPad won't run in 'clamshell' mode).

In our 4.5-star iPad Air M1 review, we called the iPad Air M1 "the ultimate student tablet", and even with the arrival of the iPad Pro with M2 chip, we still stand by that statement.

"The iPad Air M1 feels uniquely placed to be a more accessible tablet than the much more expensive iPad Pro. Its lightweight, looks great, has a stunning display, and offers excellent value for money," we explained - and that didn't include a $70 saving.

Former Google engineer predicts humans will achieve immortality within eight years - Marca

A former Google engineer has just predicted that humans will achieve immortality in eight years, something more than likely considering that 86% of his 147 predictions have been correct.

Ray Kurzweil visited the YouTube channel Adagio, in a discussion on the expansion of genetics, nanotechnology and robotics, which he believes will lead to age-reversing 'nanobots'.

These tiny robots will repair damaged cells and tissues that deteriorate as the body ages, making people immune to certain diseases such as cancer.

Ray Kurzweil's predictions

Kurzweil was hired by Google in 2012 to work on new projects related to machine learning and language processing, but he was making predictions about technological advances long before that.

One example is that in 1990 he predicted that the world's best chess player would lose to a computer in 2000, and it happened in 1997 when the Deep Blue AI beat Gary Kasparov.

Contrary to the fears of some, he believes that implanting computers in our brains will improve us.

"We're going to have more neocortex, we're going to be more fun, we're going to be better at music, we're going to be sexier," he explained.

"We're really going to exemplify all the things we value in humans to a greater extent.

"We're going to be able to meet the physical needs of all humans.

"We're going to expand our minds and exemplify these artistic qualities that we value."

According to him, by the second decade of the 21st century, it will be possible to find organs grown in laboratories.

He claims that these advances will make the human being reach immortality, something that he has placed in 2031.

Perhaps for many that is too soon, but the advance of technology is such that it could be something perfectly credible.

Sennheiser’s Momentum 4 Wireless headphones are cheaper than ever - Yahoo Singapore News

One of Engadget’s favorite pair of noise-canceling headphones is on sale at Amazon. After a nearly $85 discount, you can get the Sennheiser Momentum 4 for $265. If you’re not fussy about color, the white model is an additional $6 off. Either way, that’s a new all-time low for Sennheiser’s flagship Bluetooth headphones.

Engadget Senior Editor Billy Steele awarded the Momentum 4 a score of 82. He came away with their audio quality, noting they were among the best-sounding Bluetooth headphones he tested in 2022. Also impressive was their ANC performance and battery life. With noise cancellation turned on, Steele found he could get up to 60 hours of playtime on a single charge. That’s double what most noise-canceling headphones offer. If you don’t mind the Momentum 4’s somewhat forgettable design, they’re a great pair of headphones. I'll also note here Amazon has a handful of other Sennheiser products on sale, including the company's excellent HD 599 SE headphones.

Meike's 85mm f/1.8 Autofocus Lens is Now Available for Fujifilm and Nikon - PetaPixel

Meike 85mm f/1.8

Meike has that its autofocus-equipped 85mm f/1.8 lens that it launched last year for Sony E-mount is now available for Fujifilm X and Nikon Z-mount.

While the lens is available for Fujifilm’s APS-C cameras, Meike says the lens is capable of covering full-frame sensors, which means that it would work with any Nikon Z-mount or Sony E-mount camera regardless of sensor size (with a small list of noted exceptions specifically for a few Sony cameras). That also means that on a Fujifilm camera, the lens has an equivalent focal length of about 128mm.

The lens is constructed of nine elements arranged in six groups and features an aperture range of f/1.8 through f/22 via a nine-bladed diaphragm. It has a close focusing distance of 0.85 meters (about 33.5 inches) and a front filter size of 67mm. The Meike 85mm f/1.8 weighs 386 grams, or about 0.85 pounds.

Meike 85mm f/1.8 STM

While third-party lenses from Chinese manufacturers like Meike are not uncommon, seeing them equipped with autofocus is. The Meike 85mm f/1.8 features a stepping motor (STM) that the company says will deliver smooth and silent operation. Additionally, the lens fully communicates with the attached camera and can provide full EXIF information. The 85mm f/1.8 also has a micro USB port that allows owners to upgrade firmware via a computer, should Meike release any digital upgrades in the future.

Meike 85mm f/1.8 STM

The company says that it has applied a multi-layer coating on both sides of the lens to allow for “more realistic colors” and the glass elements are also treated to resist dust and staining and are easily wiped clean.

Below are a few sample photos captured with the lens, provided courtesy of Meike. Of note, these images are the same as what it provided as samples back when it launched the Sony E-mount version last year, so they obviously were not captured on either Nikon or Fujifilm cameras.

It should be noted that it appears Meike did intend to release this lens for Canon RF mount as well, but that option is greyed out on the company’s website. The removal of RF support is likely due to litigation fears, as Canon has demonstrated and confirmed that it will seek legal action against third-party lens manufacturers who try and sell autofocus-equipped lenses for its mirrorless camera system without explicit consent.

The Meike 85mm f/1.8 is available from the company’s website for Sony E, Nikon Z, and Fujifilm X mounts for $200.

Insta360 teases new challenger for DJI's class-leading smartphone gimbal - TechRadar

Action camera brand Insta360 is entering new territory as it’s set to reveal what appears to be a new smartphone gimbal on March 29.

The 20-second teaser video (opens in new tab) doesn’t reveal a whole lot, but there are a few clues that we can use to paint a picture. For starters, the device will sport a small screen on the handle and some kind of folding mechanism for easier storage. Smartphones will sit on the gimbal via a magnetic clasp. In between the handle and clasp, it looks like there is a control panel with a wheel for changing various shooting modes on the side. The trailer zooms past this portion so it’s hard to tell what it has exactly.

Arguably the most revealing aspect of the teaser, though, is those shooting modes. Each one is represented by an acronym, and although Insta360 doesn’t directly say what they represent, we have a pretty good idea.  “F” is for Follow Mode giving full freedom of control to move the gimbal however you want. “PF” for Pan Follow Mode locking the gimbal to a horizontal plane. And Auto Mode to automatically track a subject. But what confuses us the most is the fourth one, FPV Mode (presumably meaning First-Person View).

Edge above the competition

Other reports (opens in new tab) make the argument FPV Mode could mean the gimbal has the ability to connect to the camera of an external device, namely a drone, and see that view through a smartphone. Drones like the DJI FPV have the ability to connect their camera to the DJI Goggles 2 headset (opens in new tab) giving people an “immersive flying experience”. Insta360 doesn’t sell any drones itself so it’s possible the company will offer third-party support instead.

Assuming that this is the case, this would give the gimbal a unique edge over the competition by being more flexible. To have the same experience with DJI, you have to purchase the company's FPV drone and Goggles 2. Outside of some special online sale, you’re looking at over $1500 in equipment. Being able to see a drone’s viewpoint on a smartphone through a gimbal sounds like an interesting prospect.
