The Creator: An IMAX Guerrilla Filmmaking Project Directed by Gareth Edwards - YMCinema - The Technology Behind Filmmaking - YMCinema Magazine

IMAX has held a special live preview footage screening event at AMC Century City 15 in Los Angeles on Tuesday, August 29, 2023, interviewing The Creator’s director, Gareth Edwards. Shot on a consumer camera (Sony FX3), Edwards elaborated on the unique and unusual indie-guerrilla style he chose to shoot this mega-budget science-fiction impressive project. The ultra-compact form factor and fast operation of the FX3, allowed the crew to shoot in multiple real locations, at a fast pace in order to maximize the efficacy of the storytelling process;. Here’s a selection of quotes by Edwards. Must read for filmmakers.

Gareth Edwards (1975) is a British filmmaker. He first gained widespread recognition for Monsters (2010), an independent film in which he served as writer, director, cinematographer, and visual effects artist. He directed Godzilla (2014), and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016), and has returned to making original films with the science fiction thriller The Creator (2023). Edwards appreciates the power of the independent filmmakers. It’s more than power — a whole methodology. And it seems that Edwards has implemented it very well on The Creator, as its latest trailer looks gorgeous. Watch the new IMAX trailer (with the absolutely magnificent soundtrack by Hans Zimmer):

This mega-budget Hollywood film is aimed at the IMAX and was shot on a relatively cheap consumer camera, the Sony FX3. Y.M.CINEMA is one of the first reporting about this (make sure to read our articles: The Creator: An IMAX Movie Shot Entirely on the Sony FX3, The Battle for the Credit: ARRI ALEXA 65 vs. Sony FX3, The Creator BTS Released: Sony FX3 is Confirmed). Furthermore, when we dive more and more into the making of The Creator, we are exposed to the main reasons the FX3 was chosen for the job. The idea is to allow the operation of a small crew, facilitated production, and fast-paced, and real locations. All this realism was wrapped by CGI thanks to the greatness of ILM (Industrial Light & Magic). Let’s read what Edwards said at the IMAX special live preview footage screening event at AMC Century City 15 in Los Angeles on Tuesday, August 29, 2023.

Normally, you have to find and go to these locations, otherwise, you’re gonna have to build sets in a studio with a green screen and it’ll cost a fortune.

Director of The Creator – Gareth Edwards

In order to shoot The Creator, Edwards and his team have traveled to more than 80 locations, 8 different countries, 10,000 miles, and 150 hotels. Hence, the advantages of a small crew and simplified shooting style are clear and logical. “Normally, you have to find and go to these locations, otherwise you’re gonna have to build sets in a studio with green screen and it’ll cost a fortune,” says Edwards, and ads: “In The Creator, we wanted to go shoot the movie in real locations, and in real parts of the world that look closest to what these images are. Then, when editing, the production designer James Klein painted over those frames and put the Sci-Fi on top. We wanted to get away from the studio and go to a proper location. We went to 80 locations, 8 different countries, traveled more than 10,000 miles, and stayed over 150 hotels”. Also Edwards states: “We didn’t really use any green screens. There was occasionally a little bit here and there, but very little. Everything you see on the screen, if it’s not sci-fi, then it was really there”.

Edwards emphasizes the power of being a small crew: “We’re going to do it very differently by going to film it very small crew. We kept the crew small enough. The theory was that the costs are building a set. If you can fly everyone to anywhere in the world for that kind of money. So I was like well…let’s keep the crew small and let’s go to these amazing locations and so we went to Nepal, the Himalayas…We went to active volcanoes in Indonesia, temples in Cambodia, Thailand obviously, Vietnam, Tokyo for the mega City stuff, and then we did a little bit of Pinewood using LED technology everyone knows from Mandalorian”. Then he added a bit about the camera by saying: “Most of the time, it was just about four of us with a camera running around, and it didn’t look like this big massive movie. We tried to just be very efficient. Changes normally take 10 minutes, It took like 4 seconds”. It’s important to note that besides seeing it in the BTS, the Sony FX3 has not been confirmed yet to be utilized in The Creator. According to DP Oren Soffer, all the details will be revealed after the movie is released.

It can’t be denied that shooting a $80,000,000 production on a $4,000 USD consumer camera makes a statement. However, it seems that in The Creator, it was more than that. It’s hard to believe though, that the imagery will hold up against a giant IMAX screen. On the other hand, IMAX knows what it’s doing, and so is Edwards. And don’t forget Soffer and Fraser. Edwards keeps telling how it was important to preserve the small crew. However, a small crew could be preserved when using the Sony VENICE as well, especially when utilizing its Rialto unit. Thus, it leads us that The Creator is a marketing stunt. Anyway, it’s a good stunt as it shows the power of guerrilla filmmaking even in a high-budget Hollywood IMAX production.

4 children's books to turn your toddler into a hi-tech executive - The Jerusalem Post

Love it or hate it, parents in the modern age have to grapple with the fact that their children are being born into a digital world. As such, parents are faced with the challenge of preparing their children for a future that is becoming increasingly intertwined with technology. From smartphones to artificial intelligence, the world is evolving at a rapid pace, and it’s crucial to equip the next generation of little ones with the knowledge and skills they need to thrive in this hi-tech landscape.

But how can parents start nurturing their tech-savvy awareness from a young age? While there’s no clear answer to how one should parent their children (much to the chagrin of many), these four books from some of the Start-Up Nation’s leading professionals offer stories that will not only spark a child’s imagination but also lay the foundation for them to become hi-tech experts – even before they learn to tie their own shoes.

1. Atara Shriki’s Sophie’s Dream Lab

From author Atara Shriki in collaboration with software developer Incredibuild, the third book in the company’s Sophie book series presents an introduction to the various roles and technological tools that are necessary to make an entrepreneurial dream come true.

The book sees Sophie, the hero of the story, notice a lonely child on a bench and wish the child had a bracelet that could display their emotions through colors. She then decides to be an intrapreneur and create such a bracelet, involving various hi-tech aspects like hardware, software, and product design, all presented in a child-friendly manner with beautiful illustrations.

Incredibuild CEO Tami Mazel Shahar elaborated on the importance of the book through the perspective of her company’s continued efforts to encourage tech awareness and participation in children beginning from a young age, noting that “Sophie’s Dream Lab combines a little bit of the emotional world of children as well as continuing our legacy and bringing hi-tech to children in a very simplified way.”

The Sophie series can be found at Incredibuild’s website (https://ift.tt/TMvqwEJ) to download free of charge. Dream Lab is currently only available in Hebrew, though prior entries to the series are available in English, Spanish, and Arabic.

2. Dana Maschieny’s Castle Defenders: What Do Cyber Parents Do?

While governments worldwide focus on improving institutional cybersecurity, children’s education in this area remains limited, with fewer than half of K-8 schools in the USA offering cybersecurity lessons.

In Castle Defenders: What Do Cyber Parents Do?, author Dana Maschieny and Israeli cybersecurity unicorn Pentera address the need for resources to teach kids about cybersecurity and online safety in a relatable and engaging manner.

The book finds a fun and engaging way to present themes of cybersecurity in a format suitable for youngsters. One excerpt from the book presents the idea of nefarious online actors with the following couplets:

“Sometimes these crooks find a way in,

Hoping to do harm from within.

They go unnoticed at first, in disguise,

So it’s up to you to detect these bad guys!”

3. Ophir Guttman’s Kingdom of Eureka!

In 2019, Ophir Guttman, the first Israeli CEO of Procter & Gamble, released Kingdom of Eureka!, a children’s book focusing on fostering leadership traits in young ones. This debut work offers young readers a unique perspective on problem-solving by highlighting that every question can have numerous correct answers.

Structured as an adventure, the book includes a dedicated “playground of imagination” for each character, offering endless solutions where every answer is valued, as long as it is expressed respectfully.

Since then, two more books have been released, further exploring the themes of management and leadership for young children.

The book has been praised by several notable tech executives, including Facebook Israel’s CEO Adi Soffer-Teeni. “In today’s world, where information is accessible to everyone, creative and original thinking is the best gift a parent can give to their children,” she stated, going on to tout Kingdom of Eureka! as “A wonderful book for both children and parents alike.”

4. Netzer Shohat’s Through the Door

In Through the Door, author Netzer Shochat presents a comprehensive set of lessons designed to educate both children and parents on how to engage safely online, fostering healthy internet communication. He believes this skill is crucial for developing genuine relationships, cultivating critical thinking, and nurturing independent individuals capable of practical expression.

Written for parents and children alike, the book delves deeply into the subject matter, offering exercises suitable for group settings, family interactions, or individual parent-child activities. It draws parallels between online and offline interpersonal dynamics and covers various essential aspects of online safety and behavior.

“It is important to address the children and tell them: ‘Don’t make phones and the Internet the only way you talk. Meet, talk face to face, pay attention to expressions and gestures when you meet, understand each other better, and enjoy each other’s company,’” Shochat writes. “This is how we find ourselves from time to time closing this door to the outside world, which has been pushed into our home and into our lives.”

At present, the book is available in Hebrew, but an English translation is currently in production and expected to be released in the coming months.

SIRUI Sniper f/1.2 Autofocus Primes for APS-C Mirrorless Cameras Unveiled – Exclusive Interview - CineD

During IBC 2023, SIRUI gave us an exclusive sneak peek of their first-ever autofocus prime lenses, called Sniper. Upon launch, the SIRUI Sniper series will consist of three fast focal lengths (23, 33 and 56mm) designed for Sony E, FUJIFILM X, and Nikon Z APS-C mirrorless cameras. The new lenses should hit the shelves in November.

After gaining popularity with their budget anamorphic lenses, SIRUI ventured into all sorts of fields – from lighting to rigging accessories. But today, like a bolt from the blue, we get to know that SIRUI is launching its first AF lenses for mirrorless cameras. Please let me be honest with you: I didn’t see this coming!

Backstage at SIRUI’s booth during IBC 2023, my colleague Johnnie had the opportunity to preview these lenses. So let’s see what he learned while talking with Yu Wu from SIRUI!

SIRUI Sniper series – fast f/1.2 AF primes

Initially, SIRUI’s forthcoming Sniper series will include 3 lenses – 23, 33, and 56mm f/1.2 – with two additional focal lengths joining the family next year. The lenses are engineered for APS-C image sensors and come in three mount options: Sony E, FUJIFILM X, and Nikon Z. This means they are compatible with the Sony FX30, the FUJIFILM X-H2, X-H2S, and X-S20, as well as Nikon’s Z30, for example. According to Yu Wu, there’s currently no plan to add other mount options.

Developing an autofocus technology from scratch is a daunting task, so it will be interesting to see if the Sniper lenses can keep up with AF systems from well-established manufacturers of the likes of SIGMA and Tokina, for example. Meanwhile, make sure to watch the video above to check out a few sample shots that my college Johnnie took in the little time he had to play around with the lenses.

Each lens weighs around 400g/0.88lb and has a 58mm front filter thread. The lenses have decent close-focus capabilities. The minimum focus distance of the 23mm is around 30cm, while the 33 and 56mm can focus as close as 40 and 50cm respectively.

The Sniper lenses will be available in black or white finishes. The black version includes carbon fiber and metal gray parts, while the white lenses seem to have a glossy ceramic feel – which is quite unusual to see in a lens.

Price and availability

Although the company is still figuring out the final pricing for the Sniper series, each lens should cost around €350. The lenses will be available to purchase individually or as a set.

In typical SIRUI style, the company will run a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo before the official release, which should take place around November 2023.

What do you think of SIRUI entering the autofocus lens market segment? Do you think their AF can keep up with that of other well-established lens manufacturers? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section below!
