SIGMA CEO: The Full-Frame Foveon X3 Sensor Will be Ready This Year - YMCinema Magazine

In an interview with SIGMA CEO Kazuto Yamaki, more information about the anticipated full-frame Foveon X3 sensor has been revealed. According to Yamaki, this revolutionary sensor is in its final stage of development (stage 3) and should be ready by the end of this year (2022).

The Foveon X3 Sensor
The Foveon X3 Sensor

Foveon technology presents a unique approach to image sensors design and concept. Foveon’s distinct sensor design captures red, green, and blue light at each point in an image during a single exposure. To achieve this, the sensor takes advantage of the natural light absorbing characteristics of silicon. Light of different wavelengths is absorbed in different depths in the silicon — blue photons are absorbed near the surface, green photons in the middle, and red photons are absorbed deeper into the material, just like film cameras capture light. The advantages of capturing all three colors with three pixels at each location on the sensor array come in the form of superior image quality and sharpness, as well as in the form of cost savings due to the ability to use less silicon area to achieve the required performance for a given imaging application.

The design of the Foveon X3 Sensor
The design of the Foveon X3 Sensor

X3 sensors make use of many of the same manufacturing techniques that traditional sensors use, however, the key differences relate to the implementation of color sensitivity. Traditional image sensors start as monochrome devices and are then converted to color sensing devices through a series of masking, deposition, and etching steps that involve the use of some type of organic or plastic color filter material. The exact number of steps varies from manufacturer to manufacturer, but in general, a minimum of 3-5 steps will be required to achieve a 3-color device (Reference: Richard M. Turner and Rudolph J. Guttosch. Development Challenges of a New Image Capture Technology: Foveon X3 Image Sensors).

Sigma Updates the Development Status of the Full-Frame 3-Layer Image Sensor Camera

The muddles of the development process were declared before by SIGMA, as stated:  “The development of the three-layer image sensor is currently underway with the strong leadership of SIGMA’s headquarters in collaboration with research institutes in Japan. The stages of development can be roughly divided into the following:

  • Stage 1: Repeated design simulations of the new three-layer structure to confirm that it will function as intended.
  • Stage 2: Prototype evaluation using a small image sensor with the same pixel size as the product specifications but with a reduced total pixel count to verify the performance characteristics of the image sensor in practice.
  • Stage 3: Final prototype evaluation using a full-frame image sensor with the same specifications as the mass products including the AD converter etc. We believe that SIGMA has progressed to this stage, which means, testing the prototype in the field. Furthermore, Sigma elaborated that when proceeding to Stage 3, the company will verify the mass-producibility of the sensor with research institutes and manufacturing vendors based on the evaluation results, and then make a final decision on whether or not to mass-produce the image sensor.

SIGMA CEO Kazuto Yamaki paid a visit to the New York office of SIGMA America and took a few moments to sit with us and discuss the company’s challenges and progress over the past few years, how is taking advantage of mirrorless technology, some of the bene ts of the fp and fp L cameras, progress in developing three-layer sensor technology. In regard to the FF Foveon X3 project, he stated: “Now we are working on the prototype of the 3-layer sensor. The sensor should be available sometime this year…There are some ‘cons’ like performance in low light, but if there is a good amount of light, that camera can create very beautiful and impressive photos”. Hence, the FF versions of the 3-layer sensor should be ready by the end of 2022. We can’t wait to see the footage. Watch the full interview down below:

Eleven Therapeutics Announces $22 Million in Seed Funding USA - English - USA - English - PR Newswire

Round includes $9 Million from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, aimed at ushering in the next generation of RNAi therapeutics

TEL AVIV, Israel and CAMBRIDGE, England, Aug 02, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- Eleven Therapeutics, a biotechnology company leading the AI revolution in nucleic acid therapeutics, announced today that it has raised a total of $22 million in seed funding.

Among the roster of funders is the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which committed $9 million in funding to Eleven, including $5 million towards future equity investment supporting the development of a first-of-its-kind platform that designs small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) with ultra-long durability by utilising high throughput combinatorial chemistry and AI.

Eleven's platform aims to decipher the Structure-Activity Relationship (SAR) of siRNAs. The number of possible molecular compositions is staggeringly high, exceeding the number of grains of sand on earth. The platform solves this challenge by generating functional data about the activity profile of an unprecedented scale of siRNA molecules in parallel. In order to unlock the rules of SAR, the team is developing a robust deep learning framework. Ultimately, this proprietary, patent-protected, massively parallel screening platform will systematically identify the best combination of building blocks for therapeutic candidates.

"Eleven's new platform addresses a long-standing challenge in RNAi," said Dr. Greg Hannon, Director of the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute at the University of Cambridge, scientific co-founder of Eleven, and one of the world's leading pioneers in RNAi. "The potential chemical space for optimising these molecules is absolutely massive. Eleven's solution will map this space by generating unprecedented amounts of data, which can then be leveraged by AI. We are thrilled about this new funding and the vote of confidence by our investors that it represents."

The additional $4 million by the Gates Foundation was awarded as a non-dilutive grant furthering Eleven's development of prophylactics against endemic and pandemic-poised respiratory viruses. Importantly, the Gates Foundation's funding will promote wide accessibility of Eleven's ultimate treatments to people in need in developing countries. The company additionally has a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) with the Vaccine Research Centre of the NIAID.

As a USB 3.2 Type-C connector, it can be inserted into a host device facing either direction and while only one slot works at a time when it is connected to a tablet or smartphone, both can be used simultaneously when it is plugged into a laptop.

The PGM0.5 allows creators who generally work on tablets like the iPad to treat the device more like a laptop’s workflow. Once footage is captured, it can be edited on an iPad through an app like LumaFusion, which has been confirmed to support the interface seamlessly.

ProGrade Digital Tiny Card Reader

“The Creator Community, at its heart, is a community of storytellers. And not a day goes by that the team at LumaTouch doesn’t marvel at the stories created by this community. This is what inspired us to design LumaFusion the way we did, and to create a visceral, enjoyable, fluid editing experience for our customers,” Chris Demiris, Co-Founder and Director of Engineering for LumaTouch, says.

ProGrade Digital Tiny Card Reader

“The development team at LumaTouch has been testing the new ProGrade Digital PGMO.5 mobile card reader, and it’s clear to us they share the same inspiration. ProGrade Digital has created an effective camera-to-timeline workflow for mobile devices that works in perfect harmony with LumaFusion. We’re excited to see how LumaFusion customers who shoot on DSLRs, drones, or GoPro’s react to this seamless mobile workflow.”

The Prograde Digital PGM0.5 memory card reader is available for $35.
