YouTube has announced that its short-form video feature, the imaginatively titled Shorts, has been expanded from its initial offering of India and the USA to also cover the UK, Canada and 21 countries in Latin America. Shorts is YouTube’s answer to TikTok, allowing you to upload up-to-60-second videos to your channel in between your regular long-form videos.
The rollout in the UK, Canada and 21 countries in Latin America began a few days ago and is expected to be complete by the end of June. So, some users in those regions will already see the new shorts tab and have the ability to post a short while others will see it pop up over the next few weeks.
This brings the total number of countries in which YouTube Shorts is available up to 25, including Aruba, Bermuda, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Cayman Islands, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, India, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Turks and Caicos Islands, United Kingdom, United States, Uruguay and Venezuela.
Shorts seems to be seeing an overall positive response from both creators and their audiences, however, there are some things you’ll need to keep in mind if you’re a YouTube content creator, even if you’re not taking advantage of shorts. Namely that anybody can take audio from your content and use it in their shorts. In good news, though, YouTube has now added a batch permission to disable this feature and prevent people from sampling your videos in their shorts. However, you cannot disable this yet as an upload default, so you’ll want to make sure to manually disable it on new videos you upload.
Have you taken advantage of YouTube Shorts for your channel yet? How has the response been for you?
