Earlier Metroid Amiibo Are Returning Alongside Metroid Dread & Switch OLED - Screen Rant

Fans of Metroid will soon get another chance at securing the Dark Samus amiibo from the Super Smash Bros. series, a figure which first released in 2020. Nintendo gamers have a lot to look forward to this year with the upcoming release of the recently-revealed Nintendo Switch OLED model, as well as Metroid Prime, the first 2D Metroid game in 19 years, coming to Switch later this year. Now there's another amiibo purchase to add to the list thanks to the reprint.

Nintendo unveiled Metroid Dread during the E3 2021 Nintendo Direct, surprising and delighting gamers with the big and very unexpected reveal. The game was originally planned as a Nintendo DS game and was supposed to release in the mid-2000s. However, the game went quiet and was presumably cancelled, only now resurfacing in 2021. The reveal was particularly shocking as a new Metroid game is already in development, Metroid Prime 4. The next addition to the 3D Metroid series was announced during E3 2017, but gamers have heard little about the game since. While many were surprised to see Metroid Dread coming before Metroid Prime 4, the reveal proved to be one of the highlights of the Nintendo Direct. Fans of the series won't have long to wait for Metroid Dread, as the game will release on October 8, alongside the new Nintendo Switch OLED model.

A new two-pack of amiibo was also revealed alongside Metroid Dread, featuring both Samus and an E.M.M.I. The figures have already proven to be a hit, with many retailers soon selling out of their pre-order stock. Certain amiibo have become a highly sought-after collector's item since they first debuted for the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS systems in 2014. Many characters are difficult to acquire at launch, with lots of amiibo increasing in value year on year. As Metroid Dread climbed the pre-order charts, the amiibo two-pack became a hot commodity. For those who failed to secure their pre-order, Dark Samus might make a good substitute. A reprint of the original amiibo was spotted by Twitter user Wario64, on websites including Best Buy, retailing for $15.99. The figure appears to be exactly the same as the original 2020 version, with no changes to its core design. While unconfirmed, the amiibo shares the same release date as Metroid Dread, hinting at new functionality within the game.

As well as potentially unlocking in-game goodies for Metroid Dread players, the reprint is especially helpful for amiibo fans looking to complete their collections. Dark Samus is one of the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate amiibo, and serves as an Echo Fighter to Samus within the Nintendo brawler. The character comes with different costumes, as well as new Taunts, Victory Pose, and different visuals while in combat. It's not just Metroid fans who want Dark Samus on their shelves, but also Super Smash Bros. fans looking to utilize the figure's powers to improve their gameplay.

While it's not yet clear if the Dark Samus amiibo will have Metroid Dread functionality, the new Samus and E.M.M.I pack definitely does. The Samus amiibo can give players an extra energy tank, increasing their health by 100. A once-per-day full health regeneration can also be used with the Samus amiibo, while the E.M.M.I figure offers additional missiles, again once per day. The E.M.M.I amiibo will give Samus a Missile+ tank, to increase missile capacity by 10. Avid amiibo collectors will have to decide whether to keep their two-pack Metroid Dread figures in-box or display them out-of-box to make full use of their functionalities.
