The tide may be turning for Nikon as Z fc labelled "a hit" in Japan - DIYphotography

Well, it looks like Nikon might have finally done something right. According to a Nikkei XTREND article, the Nikon Z fc released in July “has been a hit for the first time in a long time” for Nikon. It seems to be largely put down to its “appeal” towards both young people (who like that retro look) as well as middle-aged and older people (who used cameras when they did still look like that).

Obviously, the feature set offered by the camera is a contributing factor, too. But then, the Nikon Z50 offers a very similar feature set and that doesn’t seem to have done nearly as well. Of course, the Z fc does offer a few very nice perks over the Z 50, too. Like Eye AF while shooting video, a flippy out LCD and continuous external power.

It’s a positive take on the adoption of the Nikon Z fc. The article notes that according to the BCN ranking during the week of its initial release (July 19-25th), it ranked third overall for mirrorless interchangeable lens camera sales. Hopefully, it’s a sign of things to come. The opening of the article (Google) translates a little like this:

The interchangeable-lens camera “Z fc” released by Nikon on July 23, 2021 has been a hit for the first time in a long time, with the company’s single-lens reflex camera temporarily ranked third in the sales volume ranking. At first glance, it’s just a classic-looking camera, but behind it was a careful “building” to appeal to young people as well as middle-aged and older people.

Nikon, which has the second largest market share in the industry for single-lens reflex cameras, but was overshadowed by mirrorless cameras, has been a hit with the “Z fc” released on July 23, 2009. In the “BCN Ranking” from July 19th to 25th, 2009 immediately after its release, it won the 3rd place in the actual sales ranking of mirrorless single-lens cameras. Due to the flood of reservations, “28mm f / 2.

Despite postponing the release of the “8 Special Edition Kit”, it has been performing steadily since then. Mr. How Nelson, UX Planning Section 1, UX Planning Department, Video Division, who was in charge of product planning for Z fc at Nikon, said, “It sold more than originally expected, and some stores were out of stock.

Ultimately, it seems it’s all about the packaging and marketing. As mentioned, the Z fc is pretty similar to the Z50, but in retro-packaging. It lacks the popup flash of the Z50, although it does increase the long exposure time limit from 30 seconds to 900 and a very slightly increased autofocus exposure range. And, yes, you’ve got that flippy out LCD, Eye AF while shooting video and the option to power it continuously from an external power source.

Whether or not this will indeed turn the tide for Nikon and bring them back into the running as the world switches to mirrorless remains to be seen. But it certainly is nice to see some positive news about the company for a change.
