This may be among the biggest unique features of foldable iPhone - Indiatimes.com

Ever since the foldable smartphones appeared, many Apple fans have been waiting for a foldable iPhone. While all popular Android smartphone brands including Samsung, Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi, Motorola and OnePlus have either announced foldable devices or have confirmed that they are working on the same. So far, Apple has been silent about its foldable device. The company officials have so far not made any comment on a foldable iPhone whatsoever.
But while Apple has not officially said anything on its foldable phones, the company has filed patents around foldable mobile devices. The earliest one goes back to the year 2016. Now the latest patent application, as first seen by Business Insider, is dated March 16. The application, titled "Self-retracting display device and techniques for protecting screen using drop detection," shows that the company is looking for ways to prevent serious damage to the iPhone's screen if the device is dropped. The patent also has 30-plus photos that show how technology will work.

What the patent says
"In some aspects, mobile devices with foldable and rollable displays can use a sensor to detect vertical acceleration with respect to the ground to determine if the mobile device has been dropped. If the sensor detects that the mobile device has been dropped the foldable device can fold or retract at least partially to afford protection from the fragile display from striking the ground. Even folding the display to an angle less the 180 degrees can afford some protection because the mobile device can strike edges of the mobile device instead of the display itself. In various embodiments, a rollable device can retract the display if predetermined acceleration limits are exceeded," says the abstract of the patent application.

If Apple brings this feature to foldable iPhones, it will surely be one of the biggest differentiators as so far no folding phone in the market offers this.
Foldable iPhone rumour round up
Rumours about Apple's foldable iPhone have been going on for years. The company has never confirmed one, it has filed a series of patent applications for the device. A patent filed in July 2020 is said to have hinted at the folding iPhone's design. The patent showed a design for a mobile device with a flexible display that folds in half, with one portion of the screen still visible even when the device is closed. This is a different approach from what most Android smartphone brands have taken so far.
