Fortnite And Call Of Duty Don't Do Enough To Stop Holocaust Denial, Advocate Group Says - GameSpot

The Anti-Defamation League, also known as the ADL, is an advocate group focused on stopping defamation and hate speech toward Jewish people, which includes calling out how social media and gaming platforms respond to reports of antisemitism and Holocaust denial. The advocacy group added three major online multiplayer games to its 2023 Holocaust Denial Report: League of Legends, Call of Duty, and Fortnite. Unfortunately, Call of Duty and Fortnite were two of the lowest ranking platforms on the report.

The ADL's Center of Technology and Society graded the platforms based on Holocaust denial policies and enforcement--like if they responded to user-generated reports in a timely manner. Call of Duty scored a D- and Fortnite scored an F. League of Legends was the only one of the three newly added gaming platforms that responded and took action when usernames were reported by an ordinary user, according to the report.

"Our 2023 investigation revealed that while most platforms will remove explicit Holocaust denial content for trusted flaggers such as ADL, they often do not act accordingly when the same content is reported by ordinary users," the ADL reported.

The ADL's 2021 Holocaust Denial Report included similarly ranked popular social media and gaming platforms. Facebook, Instagram, and Discord each rose a letter grade higher than their 2021 scores. For example, Facebook increased from a D to a C-. Meanwhile, Twitch, TikTok, and Twitter scores decreased. Twitter in particular plummeted from a C to a D-, the same rank as Call of Duty.

Holocaust denial continues to be an issue in online spaces. Even though the Holocaust is one of the most widely recorded events in history that affected millions of people, Holocaust deniers will insist that Jews made it up to unfairly gain sympathy. According to the ADL, the number of reports of assaults, vandalism, and harassment targeting Jewish communities and individuals in the United States was the highest it'd ever been in 2021 since it started tracking incidents in 1979.

"We urge platforms to be more proactive against Holocaust denial and to better inform users on what they are doing to curb hate," reads the report.
