Tim Cain Reveals the Accidental Origins of Fallout’s Pacifist Run

Renowned RPG developer Tim Cain, known for his involvement in the creation of Fallout, The Outer Worlds, and Troika Games, has recently shared a fascinating fact about the Fallout series on his popular YouTube channel. Contrary to popular belief, the pacifist run, where players can complete the game without directly killing any enemies, was originally an unintentional feature.

During one of his vlogs, Cain discussed the development process of Fallout and how the team stumbled upon the possibility of a pacifist playthrough. “It was accidental in Fallout,” Cain admitted. “We had designed the game with the main quest and all, but then someone in QA pointed out that you could play without killing anybody.”

Interestingly, this discovery happened as a result of most dialogue-based interactions not leading to any deaths. Realizing the potential appeal of this playstyle, the Fallout team decided to embrace and support it, making accommodations for pacifist players in future games as well. Cain expressed his admiration for those who embark on pacifist runs, highlighting the level of creativity and engagement required to complete the game without resorting to violence.

On a different note, Cain shared another interesting anecdote about the game’s development. He revealed that an enthusiastic playtester, frustrated by the presence of “essential” non-playable characters that could not be killed, inspired one of the potential story endings where the player’s character murders the Vault 13 overseer.

Tim Cain’s YouTube channel continues to captivate RPG enthusiasts, offering an array of insightful vlogs that cover everything from high-level design decisions to programming tricks in classic games.
